  • How to apply for a PAN Card online

There are two primary ways to apply for a PAN Card online. You can submit a PAN Card application through the Protean (formerly NSDL) website or through the UTIITSL platform. Submit the necessary documents and the application fees to complete the process. Apart from these two options, you can also apply for an e-PAN Card (digital version) through the e-filing website using your Aadhaar number.

If you wish to apply for a PAN Card offline, you can download Form 49A (Indian citizens) or Form 49AA (foreigners) from the Protean website. You can also obtain the relevant form from the nearest PAN centre. Fill-up this application form, attach your passport size photograph, and sign the same. As an NRI or non-resident Indian, you will have to fill Form 49A to apply for a PAN Card since you still possess an Indian citizenship.

Since Section 160 of the Income Tax Act does not mention a minimum age for PAN application, minors can also apply for a PAN Card. Parents of minor children can apply for the PAN online/offline based on their preference.

Instant e-PAN is a digital version of your PAN that takes about 10 minutes to generate. It is ideal if you wish to take advantage of opportunities like high NBFC FD interest rates and cannot wait for 15 days for a physical PAN. However, if you wish to avail the physical version of the card, you will have to apply through the Protean/UTIITSL websites and pay the associated fees.
