The second season of Indian Premier League which is well abbreviated as IPL 2 or IPL 2009 was played between 18th April 2009 between 24th May 2009. The 2nd season of IPL was hosted in South Africa due to general election in India. The competition started with a double round robin group stage, in which each of the 8 teams played a home match and an away match against every other team. These matches were followed by two semi-finals and a final. The format of Season 2 was similar to IPL season 1 and the name of IPL season 2 teams are as follows:

The final match of IPL season 2 was played on 24th May 2009 between Deccan Charges & Royal Challengers Bangalore where Deccan Charges defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 6 wickets and become the emerge winner of IPL 2. Anil Kumble from RCB become the player of the match while Adam Gilchrist of Deccan Charges becomes the Player of the series.
